Afghanistan floods – Baghlan and badakhshan
Recent floods in Afghanistan’s Baghlan and Badakhshan provinces have killed 16 people, including women and children, Tolo News reported.
According to local officials in these provinces, 500 houses were completely or partially destroyed in the floods. According to a Tolo News report, local authorities have said that the floods have affected Dand-e-Ghori, Doshi, Pul-e-Khumri city, Morchak village in central Badakhshan and several other parts of the province.
Abdul Ghafoor Khadem, head of the Taliban-appointed Baghlan Police Command, said, “Last night, there was a very heavy flood. We have suffered major casualties in Larkhab area of Doshi district of Baghlan province. In Larkhab, around six people were martyred, including three .children, one woman and two men and more than 300 houses have been destroyed.”
The Taliban-appointed head of natural disaster management in Badakhshan, Mohammad Kamgar, said the floods injured ten members of a family and another person, Tolo News reported.
Meanwhile, many families who have lost all their belongings due to the floods have expressed outrage at the delayed arrival of aid. The families called for immediate assist from the Taliban-led government and agencies.
Hezbollah, a flood victim, said, “The flood took away nine members of my family. We found two bodies, but others are still missing,” Tolo News reported. Another flood victim, Ziaullah, said, “We request that we are among the affected, whatever part of Afghanistan is allotted, don’t forget us.”
More than 300 people have died in the past week in devastating floods in parts of Afghanistan. The floods have destroyed hundreds of residential houses and destroyed thousands of acres of agricultural land.
After severe flooding in many parts of Afghanistan, the World Food Program announced on May 12 that most flood-affected areas are inaccessible by vehicles, including trucks, Khama Press reported. The organization shared a picture showing aid workers transporting emergency supplies to Baghlan using donkeys.
“Flood update – Most affected areas in Baghlan, Afghanistan are inaccessible by trucks. WFP had to resort to every option to get food to survivors who lost everything,” UNWFP posted on X.
