G-7 Summit Italia
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni shared a brief selfie video on her X account, captioned “Hi friends, from #Melodi,” showcasing her friendly rapport with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The two leaders met on Friday during Modi’s visit to Apulia in southern Italy. This visit marked Modi’s first international trip since starting his third term as Prime Minister. In the five-second video, Meloni, Italy’s first female prime minister at 47, introduced the “Melodi team,” with 73-year-old Modi seen laughing in the background. Modi later re-shared the video, expressing his enthusiasm for the India-Italy friendship.
Additionally, a selfie of the two leaders from the G7 Summit went viral earlier on Saturday. In a similar instance last December, they took a selfie during the COP28 conference in Dubai, which Meloni captioned, “Good friends at COP28, #Melodi.”
During their bilateral talks on Friday, Indian PM and Italy PM reviewed the progress of the India-Italy strategic partnership and agreed to enhance cooperation in global forums and multilateral initiatives, including the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor. Modi tweeted about their productive meeting, highlighting discussions on strengthening ties in commerce, energy, defense, telecom, and more. They also agreed to collaborate in forward-looking sectors such as biofuels, food processing, and critical minerals.
The friendly relationship between the two leaders, who previously met at last year’s G20 Summit in Delhi and later at COP28 in Dubai, has inspired numerous online memes. In December, they took a selfie during the COP28 event in Dubai. Meloni shared the photo on her X account, captioning it, “Good friends at COP28, #Melodi.” Pictures of Modi and Meloni together have circulated widely on social media, making the hashtag “Melodi” a trending topic.
During their bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit, Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Meloni discussed defense and security cooperation between India and Italy. “Both leaders talked about bilateral defense and security cooperation and expressed hopes for further strengthening defense industrial collaboration. They welcomed the upcoming visit of the Italian aircraft carrier ITS Cavour and the training ship ITS Vespucci to India later this year,” the Ministry of External Affairs stated in an official release.
