Trump Injured in Rally Shooting
Texas leaders from both political parties expressed their outrage and support for former President Donald Trump following a shooting at a campaign event in Pennsylvania on Saturday. The U.S. Secret Service quickly escorted Trump off the stage at the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, after shots were fired. later posted on social media that he was shot in the upper right ear, with blood visibly streaked across his ear. He was promptly taken to safety.
Sid Miller, the Texas Agriculture Commissioner and a long-time ally, was present at the rally, standing about 30 feet from Trump. Miller recounted the event, stating, “It looked like the first maybe three shots missed him and he was turned looking towards me. And then the one grazed his ear and then he got down.” Miller assured that Donald would be fine and expressed confidence that he would continue to the party’s national convention as planned. Miller himself was unharmed.
The suspected shooter was killed, and another rally attendee was also dead, as reported by the Associated Press. The incident is being investigated as an attempted assassination.
In the aftermath, Texas leaders took to social media to express their sentiments. Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan described the situation as “horrible and scary,” urging people to pray for Donald and those at the rally. campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung thanked law enforcement and first responders, stating that Trump was fine and being checked at a local medical facility.
Prominent Trump supporters condemned the violence on social media. Attorney General Ken Paxton wrote, “The world is evil. Praise God that President Trump was able to walk away on his own. Praying for complete healing and that this person is captured immediately.” U.S. Senator Ted Cruz echoed this sentiment, calling the act “horrific, wrong, and evil” and expressing gratitude that Trump was not seriously injured. Governor Greg Abbott added, “They try to jail him. They try to kill him. It will not work. He is indomitable.”
The White House revealed that President Joe Biden had been briefed on the situation. Biden expressed his relief that Trump was safe, stating, “I’m praying for him and his family and for all those who were at the rally, as we await further information. Jill and I are grateful to the Secret Service for getting him to safety. There’s no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as one nation to condemn it.” Biden later mentioned at a news conference that he planned to speak with former precidentand reiterated the need for universal condemnation of the shooting.
Vice President Kamala Harris also expressed relief that his was not seriously injured, stating that she and Doug Emhoff were praying for Trump, his family, and others affected by the incident. She emphasized that violence has no place in the nation and called for collective condemnation of the act.
Former President Barack Obama shared his relief that Trump wasn’t seriously hurt, stating, “There is absolutely no place for political violence in our democracy. Although we don’t yet know exactly what happened, we should all be relieved that former President Trump wasn’t seriously hurt, and use this moment to recommit ourselves to civility and respect in our politics.”
